Subway Series 8 - Stoic - NY, NY

This man intrigued me. He was oblivious to the fact I was taking his photo. Like many people on the subway he was in his own world, closing out the strangers around him. I used slow shutter set on 1/16 of a second. The constant movement of the train causes the image to look like a painting rather than a photograph.

Millions of people travel the New York subway everyday. Rarely leaving more than a fleeting imprint of their presence. Using a slow shutter with a digital camera captured this image of ghostly impressions of people moving on and off the train.
Subway Series 6 - Patience - NY, NY

This man stood so still as he waited for the train. I stood behind him and set the camera to a 1/2 second exposure. If you look closely you can see a person standing on the train platform through the train.
Subway Series 5 - Stance - NY, NY

Brace yourself, you are on the train. Rattle, rattle, lurch. Sitting you can relax and tune out. Find a pole, hold on. Lean against a door and ride it out. All in their own little world, tuning out the crush of other bodies. I love to watch people move on the train, balancing with ease or stiff and uncomfortable trying to maintain their dignity in a sea of strangers.
Subway Series 4 - Orange Sneakers - NY, NY

New York is a city of black. Black clothing, worn like camouflage blends in to the asphalt, soot and grimy concrete. Whenever I see someone wearing a bright color in the monochrome mass of winterized New Yorkers I’m delighted.
Subway Series 2 - Hands - NY, NY

I had to be careful taking this image. The older couple sitting next to me was having an animated conversation in a language I didn’t recognize. The man had the most beautiful way of talking with his hands. They seemed to notice I was taking images. What I most wanted to capture was the expressive way he had of talking with his hands. I played with shutter speed and timing. I finally captured this moment. Even six months later the graceful way he punctuated their conversation with his hand gestures sticks in my mind.
Subway Series 1 - New York City

This woman really struck me. Her face looked so sad yet the way she presented herself was beautiful and stood out from everyone else on the subway car. I chose to show her in black and white to highlight the wonderful textures of her hair and clothing.
